Syllabus Overview (Current, CCF 2022)
1. Course Structures and Credits
Physics Major: Students complete 4-credit papers (100 marks each) across six semesters, including Core (DSCC) and Skill Enhancement Courses (SEC).
Multidisciplinary Course (MDC): Students can take Physics as a Core subject (8 papers) or a Minor subject (6 papers).
Minor Papers: Options exist for 3-year Minor (MDC) or 4-year Minor (taken as either a First or Second Minor alongside another Major).
Interdisciplinary Course (IDC): A 3-credit course ("Frontiers in Physics") offered to students who do not have Physics as a Major, Minor, or MDC subject.
2. Semester-wise Major Syllabus (PHSA)
Semester 1: Basic Physics - I (Mathematical Physics and Classical Mechanics) and SEC: Computer Programming and Graph Plotting.
Semester 2: Basic Physics - II (Electricity, Magnetism, and Thermodynamics) and SEC: Scientific Writing Skills (LaTeX) or Artificial Intelligence.
Semester 3: Waves and Optics, Mathematical Physics I, and a choice of SEC (Arduino or Introductory Data Analysis).
Semester 4: Modern Physics, Electromagnetism, Mathematical Physics II, and Classical Mechanics & Special Theory of Relativity.
Semester 5: Electronics I, Nuclear and Particle Physics, Quantum Mechanics, and Thermal Physics & Statistical Mechanics.
Semester 6: Electronics II, Solid State Physics, and Atomic, Molecular, and Laser Physics.
3. Multidisciplinary & Minor Highlights
MDC Core: Follows a path similar to the Major but with a reduced number of papers, focusing on foundational subjects like Basic Physics I & II, Waves and Optics, and Modern Physics.
4-Year Minor: Students take Basic Physics I & II in their first two or middle two semesters (depending on if it is their first or second minor), followed by Waves and Optics (Sem 5) and Modern Physics (Sem 6).
4. Interdisciplinary Course (IDC)
Frontiers in Physics: This qualitative course introduces the nature of science, the universe (Big Bang, stars), matter (thermodynamics, atoms), and fundamental forces including brief ideas on Relativity and Quantum Mechanics.
5. Assessment and Marking
Major/Minor/MDC Papers: Each 4-credit paper is equivalent to 100 marks.
IDC Paper: Carries 3 credits and is equivalent to 75 marks.
Components: Courses typically consist of a Theory (Th) component (3 credits) and either a Practical (Pr) or Tutorial (Tut) component (1 credit).
