ZOOLOGY

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

Since the establishment (1996 - General degree Course ; 2010 -Honours Curriculum), the Department of Zoology of  has been maintaining academic and scholastic ambience to provide quality education to the students while fostering the idea of young minds and motivate them to think out of the box. National Education Policy has been introduced to emphasize new-age discourses like problem-solving skills, critical thinking, internship program etc.

Core Values

Academic achievement, creativity, moral behaviour, diversity, and teamwork are the department's key values. It is dedicated to preserving the highest standards in research and education while supporting an ethical and respectful culture.

Our Courses  :

  1. 4 year NEP curriculum for ZOOLOGY MAJOR
  2. 3 year NEP curriculum for multidisciplinary course (MDC)
  3. Certificate Course on Computational Biology

DBT STAR Sponsored Department

A major milestone in our journey has been the recognition under the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) STAR College Scheme that reflect its sustained academic performance and commitment to quality enhancement which has significantly strengthened our infrastructure and pedagogical practices

DBT Workstations :

Dedicated Research & Academic Infrastructure

The Department of Zoology is supported by a well-developed academic infrastructure designed to facilitate both theoretical understanding and practical  learning , additionally modern well equipped laboratory with advanced research infrastructure.

A key strength of the department is its two  DBT STAR College Scheme–sponsored  Laboratory, equipped with modern instruments

1.Cell Biology & Molecular Biology Lab

      2. Experimental Biology and Model organism Lab

Air-conditioned environment to ensure a conducive learning space

In addition, the department is supported by:

  • Two ICT-enabled classrooms, equipped with
    • Smart interactive panels
    • Projectors
  • Two General Laboratory
  • dedicated faculty workstation, used for academic planning, research activities, and student mentoring

Instrumental Facilities

The Department of Zoology maintains adequate instrumental facilities to support curriculum delivery and skill-based learning at the undergraduate level. The available instruments are utilized for conducting practical classes, project work, and introductory research training. Access to these facilities helps students develop core competencies in experimental techniques, data handling, and scientific observation, thereby enhancing their readiness for higher education and research.

  • Cold Centrifuge
  • Transblot apparatus (for protein transfer in Western blotting)
  • Vertical & Horizontal Gel Apparatus
  • ELISA reader
  • Stereozoom Microscope & software supported image system
  • Spectrophotometer
  • BOD incubator for Drosophila Culture
  • GPS navigator

Academic Collaboration

Research Exposure &   Internship

The Department of Zoology has established functional academic collaborations with laboratories of the University of Calcutta to promote experiential learning. These initiatives enable students to access advanced research facilities, engage in internship-based training, and develop competencies aligned with higher education and research standards.

  • Cytogenetics & Genomics Lab of the Department of Zoology  ,The University of Calcutta for Drosophila, model organism related work
  • Department of Neuroscience , The University of Calcutta for Zebrafish, the model organism related work

Skill Development & Training

The Department of Zoology is committed to equipping students with essential practical and analytical skills required for higher education and research. The curriculum is complemented by hands-on training in the following areas:

  • Molecular Techniques – Basic training in DNA/RNA handling, electrophoresis, and protein analysis (including Western blotting).
  • Model Organism Handling – Practical exposure to maintenance and experimental use of model organisms such as Drosophila melanogaster and Zebra fish.
  • Bioinformatics – Introduction to sequence analysis, database searching, and computational tools used in modern biology.
  • GIS and Remote Sensing Applications – Training in spatial analysis and mapping tools relevant to ecology, biodiversity assessment, and environmental monitoring.

These training components enhance students’ technical competence, analytical thinking, and preparedness for advanced studies and interdisciplinary research.
